Culture - The ways of thinking, the ways of acting, and the material objects that together form a people's way of life.
Gloria references her culture quite often in the show. When talking to Claire, she references back to her people's way of life when saying things like, "In my country, it is tradition that when the men are out seeking vengeance, the women stay home and drink."
Norms - Rules and expectations by which a coiety guides the behaviors of its members.
Cultural norms of the US are demonstrated when Cam and Mitchell go to a movie that they think is very scary and violent. A man walks in with his two children shortly after Cam and Mitchell sit down. The norm of sheltering children from R rated films was broken, and Cam made this known to the father that brought the two children. Little did Cam know, he and Mitchell were in the wrong theatre, and it was actually the Muppets playing.
Mores - Norms that are widely observed and have great moral significance.
Exchanging insurance and identification as well as contacting the police would be a more in the United States after a car accident. This more is broken when Cam and Mitchell get rear ended and the driver who rear ended them drove off without exchanging this information. It was a hit and run.
Subculture - Cultural patterns that set apart some segment of a society's population.
Cam and Mitchell would be part of the gay subculture within the culture of the United States. They fit into this subcultural pattern, but it is not to say that this is the only group they fit into. It is just one of many subcultures.
Language- A system of symbols that allows people to communicate with one another.
Gloria had to learn a new language when she moved to the United States from Colombia. In the show you can tell that she is still learning to expand her knowledge of the American language. Many people throughout the world use their own unique language to communicate with one another.
Values- Culturally defined standards that people use to decide what is desirable, good, and beautiful and that serve as broad guidelines for social living.
All of the charachters in the show value the importance of family. Family is viewed as a beautiful and good thing to have in life. The charachters go through many situations where they always turn to family for help. In today's society we all value the importance of our family as well.
Technology- Knowledge that people use to make a way of life in their surroundings.
In the Dunphy family, the father Phil is very much addicted to anything dealing with technology. He always has to have the coolest gadgets and the latest technology. He buys a complicated version of a TV remote thinking that everyone in his family will already know how to use it. But instead he ends up spending hours teaching them how it works. In the end the family knows how to use it and their lives become much more simpler because of the new technology..
Culture shock- Personal disorientation when experiencing an unfamiliar way of life
When all of the families travel to the mountains for a trip, they experience culture shock. The families in the show are all from rich suburbs; when they do things such as fishing, hiking, or horseback they seem very confused and shocked that people actually do those activities for fun. Depending on where a certain person grows up, we all might have experienced culture shock.
Phil always wants the newest and best technology to make his life easier.
Cameron (right) and Mitchell (left) are known to be in a subculture because they are gay.
